Writing a clear freelance brief: method and template
A well-described job attracts the right profiles, avoids misunderstandings and secures the relationship. Here is a simple method and a template to copy, with points to watch under French law.
General information, accurate at the date shown: it does not replace legal, social-security or tax advice for your situation. Check the official sources quoted or ask a professional (lawyer, accountant).
1. The expected result
One or two sentences: what must exist at the end? “A company website online”, “an approved communication plan”, “40 covers served on Saturday night”.
2. Context
Your business, the team, what exists, constraints (tools, data, access). A few lines are enough.
3. Scope and deliverables
- what is included and excluded;
- concrete deliverables;
- the number of review rounds.
4. Schedule
Start, end or estimated duration, pace, milestones. For an extra: exact date and hours.
5. Location, working mode, languages
On site, hybrid or remote; city (Metz, Nancy, Thionville…); languages. Near the border, German or English are often useful.
6. The legal framework
A freelancer must keep their autonomy: describe the expected result, not how to work hour by hour. If the person must follow your instructions, on your hours, as part of your team, it is in principle employment — Service-public.gouv.fr points out that the presumption of self-employment can be rebutted and the relationship reclassified. Details: Self-employed or employee in France. For a hospitality extra: CDD d’usage.
7. Budget
A range or a quote. The price is agreed directly between you; Askfreelance takes no commission.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to state a budget?
No. A range helps professionals; otherwise, ask for a quote.
How long does it take to post?
A few minutes. Each job is reviewed by a person before publication.
How do I avoid a freelance job being reclassified?
Describe a result, let the freelancer organise their work and avoid integrating them like an employee. If in doubt, take advice.
