An extra is an employee

In France, an extra is hired by the venue, usually on a CDD d’usage — a fixed-term contract that Service-public.gouv.fr describes as possible in certain sectors, including hotels, cafés and restaurants. According to that page, this requires in particular:

  • a written contract for each assignment;
  • pay at least equal to the collective-agreement minimum, plus a paid-leave allowance;
  • compliance with the sector’s maximum working hours.

The employer also files the DPAE (pre-hiring declaration) before the start. Full details and sources: Hiring an extra on a CDD d’usage (HCR).

Describing the shift

Position, exact date and hours, location, dress code, experience, languages spoken with guests, meals or transport if any. A precise post attracts suitable candidates.

And Luxembourg?

Many extras from Thionville and Metz also work in Luxembourg venues, under different rules (Luxembourg contract, CCSS declaration). Venues based in Luxembourg post on askfreelance.lu.

Before the shift: what to check

  • The written contract is signed for this assignment and the DPAE has been filed;
  • a welcome is planned: who to report to, changing room, briefing on the menu and stations;
  • safety: hygiene rules, allergens, kitchen equipment;
  • working time: hours, breaks and actual hours recorded for payroll.

Frequently asked questions

Can an extra work as a micro-entrepreneur?

As a rule, an extra works under the venue’s authority, which characterises an employment contract. Service-public.gouv.fr points out that a relationship of subordination can lead to reclassification.

Is a contract needed for each assignment?

According to Service-public.gouv.fr, the extra’s CDD d’usage must be written and drawn up for each assignment.

Is matching free?

Yes. Askfreelance is free for venues and extras alike.

Can I find an extra for the same day?

It depends on availability. Post the job as early as possible with the exact date and hours; every listing is reviewed before publication.

Must the extra be experienced?

State what you expect in the post: some positions (dishwashing, runner) may suit a beginner, others need confirmed experience.
